Surely the idea that autism is an epidemic to be cured is shocking! I support children with autism every day and have the view that the high numbers of diagnoses is due to the fact that dysregulation and other behaviours are now seen as being barriers which can be supported rather than bad behaviour or choices. It feels like it actually means that the neurodiverse brain is part of the natural spectrum of human diversity and needs to be reframed in a more positive light. Who decides which cookie cutter personality traits are acceptable?

I think lots of people find it shocking, yet the nonsense keeps on coming.

The understanding of ‘can’t vs won’t’ helps shift to a different way of responding to / supporting needs which is definitely positive.

I’m hoping there’s more positive reframing to be done. We’re expanding our understanding but different agendas mean sometimes working in different directions.

Ohhh. I go around, and around, AND around in circles about this issue. I feel so ‘conflicted’. Not least because I seem to know more neurodivergent people than neurotypicals - making me question the whole concept of ‘neurotypical’ too. Argh.
