I love the idea of a dawn chorus day! And the app sounds fab. I hope they have plenty of New Zealand birds on it as the soundscape is completely different here from the UK - shall check it out. Lots of fantails in our garden this year, they are one of my favourite birds, super-friendly and curious about humans 😃

I was wondering about the fact it's an International day in May, but how that translated to the southern hemisphere and daylight hours etc etc... I'd love to hear a recording of the NZ birdscape.

Fantails sound a bit like robins with that curiosity and friendliness. Do you get robins there too??!! You're opening up a whole world of new bird possibilities.

What does the dawn chorus sound like for my subscribers / followers around the world?

Yes, we do have some robins, but far more bellbirds and fantails.

That's true. The dawn chorus is much more prominent in spring! When people design 'international' things, they have a habit of forgetting about the southern hemisphere 🙃

A beautiful and poignant read, thank you. I very much align with where you're coming from. I have had the Merlin app on my phone for 12 months but never used it. I will be activating it today! Thanks for the nudge..

Thank you for commenting shawnie. I’m so glad you enjoyed it.

Oooh, I hope you do! I’ve used the app twice already today, at the park and in the woods. With the aid of a friend and the app, I have just learned to identify the green woodpecker’s call- it sounds like it’s laughing!
